Designated Schools

To enrich initiatives related to global human resource development in Tokyo, 20 schools were selected to promote advanced initiatives, designated as the “Global Education Network 20” from 2022. By participating in high school and university lectures with students from a variety of nationalities, students are able to experience what it would feel like to study abroad.

International Exchange Concierge

The Tokyo Board of Education established the Concierge in October 2018 to handle all support related to matching, such as offering information related to overseas schools that could be exchange partners, accepting consultations, and providing support for negotiations in foreign languages so that Tokyo municipal schools can broadly engage in international exchange that is appropriate for their school.

JET / ALT

Both JET and ALT teachers are native speaking instructors, and they provide weekly guidance at metropolitan high schools and engage in a variety of activities.
Each metropolitan high school has two JETs assigned.

Multilingual

The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education is holding foreign language lecture courses targeting metropolitan high school students in order to enrich an environment allowing study of various languages. These will promote cultural exchange, dispatch foreign language lectures to club activities involving the study of foreign languages, establish non-English foreign language elective courses in metropolitan high schools, and more.

Overseas dispatch training for teachers of foreign languages

The goal of this training was expanding of student language activities, improving teacher instruction and English ability for the sake of cultivating communication skills, and encouraging understanding of other cultures.
140 foreign language (English) instructors (from junior high, high school and special needs schools) and English education development leaders were dispatched, with young people playing a central role.

Integrated Municipal Elementary, Junior High and High Schools

In April 2022, the Japan’s First Public P-12 School was opened in Tachikawa City, Tokyo.

We’re exchanging information with overseas boards of education towards the further fostering of rich international sensibilities in metropolitan high school students.

Junior High School English Speaking Test (ESAT-J)

The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education runs an integrated and consistent English education program from elementary school to junior high and high school in order to enable students to further improve the English communication skills they obtained at elementary and junior high school after entering high school. From 2022, the English Speaking Achievement test has been held for students in their third year at public junior high schools in Tokyo.
