JETs・ALTs

About the JET Programme

The JET Programme (The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme) is undertaken by local governments under the collaboration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR).

The JET Programme invites young people from abroad to engage in cultural exchange activities and foreign language education at local governments, boards of education, as well as at elementary, junior high and high school institutions, with the goal of promoting grassroots internationalization on the regional level. From the outset, the program has been highly valued as a large-scale people-to-people exchange from various countries around the world. Participants and Japanese people from each region involved with the program, craft international networks with the expectation of plentiful benefits for the global community.

Expansion of the number of JETs placed in Tokyo Metropolitan High Schools

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been using the JET Programme since FY2013, and the number of JETs have gradually been increasing ever since.
As of summer FY2024, there are now multiple JETs (2 or more) placed at every metropolitan high school.

The number of JETs was expanded with the aim of increasing opportunities for communication in English both inside and outside the classroom. In conjunction with initiatives such as online English conversation classes, the development of practical English language skills will be further promoted.

About ALTs

Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) are foreign nationals serving as English education assistants. Both JETs and ALTs are native English instructors. At Tokyo metropolitan high schools, students in all academic years are taught by a native speaker on a weekly basis.
Please see below for more information about the various activities undertaken by JETs and ALTs.
