The English Speaking Achievement test for Junior High School Students

The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education runs an integrated and consistent English education program from elementary school to junior high and high school in order to enable students to further improve the English communication skills they obtained at elementary and junior high school after entering high school.
From 2022, the English Speaking Achievement test has been held for students in their third year at public junior high schools in Tokyo.

Q&A

This page has been created with the aim of enhancing understanding of the system as far as possible.

Here you can find answers to questions such as the following.

  • What kind of preparations should I make?
  • I am worried because I don’t go to a cram school or English conversation school.
  • How is speaking ability evaluated?
  • Who grades the tests?
  • In contrast to multiple choice exams, there can be more than one correct answer. Is it possible to grade the test fairly?
  • I heard that if students who have no confidence in their speaking ability but usually have good scores in English miss the test, they will have a better score in the entrance exam.
  • ESAT-J results are returned late. I’m worried that I might have to change my preferred school.
